Why Do Nigerians Expect the Country to Move Forward?

Why Do Nigerians Expect the Country to Move Forward? Folks let me express my personal views on this intriguing million dollar question. Since the British forced Amalgamation Nigeria since the so called Independence have been unable to conduct a credible census. The country has been unable to elect one qualified president. Every president we have had with the exception of Yaradua and Jonathan had no Bachelor’s degree not to talk about advanced degrees. Majority are Army officers who basically took some courses at Sandhurst Military College in England, on military leadership and most forced their way to the Head of State position through a military coup.

All the Presidents we have had are failed presidents; in other words all of the presidents we have had so far none of them could be described as successful in any way. Overwhelming majority of the presidents are descendants of the military tradition. Obasanjo ruled Nigeria on three instances, as a Military Head of State and twice as a civilian elected president. Perhaps the biggest legacy Obasanjo left behind in my view includes the squandarama involving the Nigerian Communications Satellite built by China which never reached its desired orbit and eventually exploded in the wrong orbit and its carcass was scattered across the world. We now have Buhari, who has ruled twice and getting ready for his third presidency. In all these years, Nigeria has had no steady power supply, Nigerian Railways System went Bankrupt, and the Nigeria Airways followed in that order and the Nigerian Ports Authority is barely staying afloat thanks to Lagos seaport. Calabar, Port Harcourt and Warri seaports have basically been abandoned. We created 36 states, most of these states would not survive without share of oil revenues coming from the Central Federal Government’s exploitation of the Niger Delta oil resources.

In the meantime the cost of governance in some of these 36 states has pushed these states to the point of financial and economic insolvency. Lets not go into the state of infrastructure development in Nigeria. So the question is why should anyone who is sane expect Nigeria to move forward? If Buhari wins again he may rule Nigeria into his eighties. What is the problem with Nigeria? It is a problem of Leadership and the Nigerian electorate shares their own blame. I have always argued that Leadership mantle must be passed on to the younger educated and experienced generation. The country is going no where under its current trajectory. In 1960 Nigeria and South Korea were on same economic development stage according to IMF. Compare where South Korea is today with where Nigeria is and the points being made here would become more obvious Anyone who expects this country to advance based on its current trajectory needs to get their head examined! Leadership Garbage in, Leadership Garbage out!
